The City of Hardeeville
The City of Hardeeville grew up around a railroad stop. Isaac Hardee owned the land, and his son Whyte William Hardee opened a depot and store on the Charleston & Savannah Railway that people called Hardee’s Station. Timber and turpentine kept the town going, and it was incorporated in 1911. Long before that, in 1732, Swiss settlers founded Purrysburg on the Savannah River, inside what is now the city.
For most of the last century Hardeeville was a stop for travelers on US 17 and later I-95. That changed fast. The 2020 census counted 7,473 people, more than two and a half times the 2010 figure, which made it one of the fastest-growing cities in South Carolina. Most of the growth is in big planned communities along US 278 and SC 170, on the Bluffton side of the city. The city is mostly in Jasper County, runs by a council and a city manager, and keeps City Hall on Main Street.
Hardeeville Communities
Three of the area’s best-known communities have Hardeeville addresses, though buyers often think of them as Bluffton or Hilton Head. Latitude Margaritaville is Minto’s 55-and-over community off US 278. Hilton Head Lakes is a newer community of several builders around a public golf club. And the northern sections of Sun City Hilton Head, including Argent Lakes and Sun City West, sit inside the city in Jasper County.

Things to Do in Hardeeville SC
The Savannah National Wildlife Refuge borders Hardeeville on the west, and it is the best reason to stop. Laurel Hill Wildlife Drive, about four miles of dirt road between old rice-field ponds, is open every day from sunrise to sunset; drive it slowly for alligators, herons, egrets and, in winter, ducks. Walking and biking trails leave from the same area, and the visitor center on SC 170 keeps weekday hours.
Sergeant Jasper Park, the county park off I-95 Exit 8 on Red Dam Road, has fishing lakes (you need a pass), canoes and kayaks to rent, about three miles of trails, a playground and an 18-hole disc golf course called The Sarge. Getting Around and Everyday Life
From City Hall it is about 25 minutes to downtown Savannah, 20 to 25 minutes to Old Town Bluffton and about half an hour to the bridges onto Hilton Head; Latitude Margaritaville, on US 278, is closer to the island.
