Shelter Cove Towne Centre, Hilton Head’s mid-island shopping centre (you will also see it spelled Shelter Cove Towne Center), is an open-air street of shops: buildings with covered walkways, parking out front and the park behind. Belk is the anchor, split across two buildings, and the rest is mostly women’s clothing and boutiques: Birdie James, Spartina 449, Talbots, J.Jill and a handful of independents, plus lululemon, a running shop, a sports shop and Heritage Fine Jewelry. The shops at Shelter Cove lean towards what you wear on the island; the gift and souvenir shops are mostly across the road at the harbour.

It is a big, full-size supermarket, open from 6 a.m. to 11 p.m., with a Starbucks counter inside, a pharmacy, and a Kroger fuel centre at 26 Shelter Cove Lane. Shelter Cove Farmers Market and the Park

The Shelter Cove farmers market is the Hilton Head Community Market, held on Saturday mornings from 9:30 to 12:30, every week from February to December, in Shelter Cove Community Park behind the shops. It is farmers, bakers and local makers, rain or shine, and dogs are welcome.
The park is the Towne Centre’s back garden: a lawn and stage on Broad Creek, a playground and a promenade along the marsh. In summer it hosts concerts and free Thursday movie nights. The apartments above the shops are WaterWalk, a rental community; our WaterWalk page covers it.
From the Mall at Shelter Cove to the Towne Centre
The Towne Centre stands on the site of The Mall at Shelter Cove, which opened in 1988 with Belk as one of its anchors. Kroger bought the property in 2011, the mall closed in January 2013 and demolition started the same month. Kroger opened its new store that December, and the open-air centre that replaced the mall, about 290,000 square feet with a five-acre park, filled in over the next few years, with the WaterWalk apartments above it.
Plenty of people still call it the Shelter Cove mall, and on Hilton Head that means this place. The old mall’s store list is long gone, so a store you remember from before 2013 may not be here now: the directory above is the current one.
Parking and Getting Here
The Towne Centre is at 40 Shelter Cove Lane, off William Hilton Parkway at the island’s mid-point, across the parkway from Palmetto Dunes. Parking is free and there is no gate. The harbour is a few hundred yards away across Shelter Cove Lane, and the island’s bike paths run to both, so it is an easy ride from the villas in Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove.
