Columbia is the natural place to stop for gas and lunch. Joining I-95 farther north is the alternative, about half an hour slower. The last few miles are the same either way: US 278 is the only road onto Hilton Head.

Flying from Charlotte to Hilton Head

Charlotte is one of the easiest cities to fly from: American Airlines flies nonstop from Charlotte to Hilton Head Island Airport every day, and it is the airport’s busiest route. The airport is on the north end of the island, a short drive from most places to stay. When to Arrive on the Island

Saturday is changeover day for most vacation rentals, and in summer the traffic onto the island backs up from late morning into the afternoon. Leaving Charlotte by 7 gets you there before the worst of it; weekday evening rush hour is the other slow time.
