Shelter Cove rentals are condos, not houses: villas owned one by one in a handful of buildings around the marina and along Broad Creek, at the middle of Hilton Head Island. What you get for choosing Shelter Cove is the walk: from most of these buildings the harbour, the restaurants, the charter docks, Kroger and the community park are a few minutes on foot.

Shelter Cove Villas and Condos

The buildings split three ways. Four stand on the harbour itself: Harbourside I and II and Harbourside III sit above the shops and restaurants around the King Neptune statue, and Yacht Club Villas and Mainsail line the yacht basin. At the quiet western end, Captains Quarters faces Broad Creek and the marsh, and Anchorage Villas is set back around two lagoons. The third group, Newport Villas, the Peninsula at Newport and Tradewinds Trace, is residential (below).

Sizes run from one-bedroom flats at Captains Quarters and Harbourside to two- and three-bedroom villas of more than 2,000 square feet at Mainsail. Anchorage is the one that takes pets, for guests as well as owners.

Booking a Shelter Cove Vacation Rental

Villas are owned separately, so there is no single front desk, with one exception: Harbourside III is sold in quarter shares and runs its own rental office in the building, booking Sunday-to-Sunday weeks. Everywhere else, companies that rent Shelter Cove villas include Hilton Head Rentals, Palmetto Dunes Oceanfront Resort, Trident Rentals, The Vacation Company and Vacation Time of Hilton Head Island, and many villas are listed on Vrbo too. The Palmetto Dunes Resort program rents villas at Captains Quarters, Harbourside and Mainsail. Getting to the Beach

Shelter Cove is on the sound side of the island, so the ocean is across William Hilton Parkway in Palmetto Dunes, a mile or more from these buildings. The Palmetto Dunes Buggy, a free shuttle that runs in season, carries residents and guests between Palmetto Dunes and Shelter Cove: to the beach, the golf courses and tennis, and back to the harbour and the Towne Centre. The bike paths along the parkway are the other way across.

Residential Buildings

Three Shelter Cove buildings are for owners more than visitors. Newport Villas and the Peninsula at Newport share a gated peninsula in Broad Creek behind the Towne Centre, and neither allows short-term vacation rentals. Tradewinds Trace, 28 townhomes by the Arts Center, restricts short stays. Their pages are for buyers and long-stay renters.

Shelter Cove Condos for Sale

For an owner who wants to rent, the building decides almost everything. Captains Quarters, Harbourside, Yacht Club Villas and Anchorage allow short-term rentals; Newport and the Peninsula do not, Tradewinds Trace restricts them, and sources disagree on Mainsail’s minimum stay, so read the current regime rules before you buy. Harbourside III is sold in quarter shares rather than whole villas.

Shelter Cove is part of the Palmetto Dunes property owners’ association, so owners pay its annual fee on top of their own building’s regime fee, and owners who rent short-term also pay the transportation fee that helps fund the Dunes Buggy. You need a Town short-term rental permit and business license for stays under 30 days. Hotels and Resorts at the Harbour

Not every stay here is a villa rental. Two vacation-club resorts sit at the harbour, Marriott’s Harbour Point and Sunset Pointe and Disney’s Hilton Head Island Resort; both are on our Hilton Head resorts list.
