Ask for Sea Pines hotels, Hilton Head’s gated south end gives you one real hotel and a lot of villas. The hotel is The Inn & Club at Harbour Town. Three Marriott Vacation Club resorts rent two-bedroom villas inside the gate, and everything else is a rental home or villa, booked through The Sea Pines Resort or a rental company. The Inn & Club at Harbour Town

If you want a Sea Pines hotel in the usual sense, with a front desk and a room rather than a whole villa, this is the only one. It sits in Harbour Town, close enough to walk to the Harbour Town Lighthouse and the marina restaurants, and it is run by The Sea Pines Resort, which bills it as the only Forbes Four Star hotel on Hilton Head Island.

Check-in is from 4 p.m., at the inn itself. The resort mails two gate passes before the trip; if they have not arrived, pick them up at the Sea Pines Welcome Center on the way in. Arrive early and you can collect passes there and use the resort’s amenities until the room is ready.

Marriott Villa Resorts in Sea Pines

Three Marriott Vacation Club resorts sit inside Sea Pines. They are villa resorts, not hotels: each unit is a two-bedroom, two-bath condo with a kitchen and a living room, which suits a family or two couples better than a hotel room does. They are vacation ownership resorts, and Marriott also rents the villas by the night. If you want a resort near Sea Pines’ beach, the Monarch is on it. The Harbour Club and the Heritage Club are at the Harbour Town end, a walk from the lighthouse instead.

Sea Pines Accommodations: Hotel, Villa or Home?

Most people who stay in Sea Pines rent a house or a villa, not a hotel room. The Sea Pines Resort rents homes and villas of its own, and so do many rental companies. If you book through the resort, you check in at the Welcome Center, where the front desk hands over two gate passes and the resort’s Guest Amenity Card. If you book through a rental company, the company usually buys your passes from the community association ahead of time and sends them to you.

The trade-off is simple. The inn gives you a hotel room and hotel service. A Marriott villa gives you a kitchen and two bedrooms in a resort with pools. A rental home gives you the most space and the widest choice of location, from the beach to the marsh.

The nearest cluster of Hilton Head Island hotels to Sea Pines is along South Forest Beach Drive and around Coligny, within about a mile and a half of the Ocean Gate in a straight line.
