Hilton Head Island Airport (HHH)

Charlotte every day on American, Atlanta on Delta, and seasonal flights from six more cities.

Three airlines fly into Hilton Head Island Airport: American, Delta and United. Charlotte is the year-round route, with American every day, and Atlanta on Delta is the other big connection; Chicago, New York, Newark, Washington, Philadelphia and Boston are seasonal, mostly spring to fall. The planes are regional jets, so fares are often higher than into Savannah, an hour away, where nine airlines fly. Compare both on flights to Hilton Head, and see the Savannah airport guide for the bigger one.

Car hire at Hilton Head airport is unusually easy: all eight counters are in the baggage claim area and the cars are in the lot next to the terminal, so renters often drive away before their bags are on the belt. Hours change with the season and the counters close in the evening, so if your flight is delayed late at night, call your company’s counter before you land. Cars can run short in busy weeks like the RBC Heritage in April and on summer Saturdays, so book early, or compare car rental at the Savannah airport, which has more cars.

From Hilton Head Airport to Your Rental and the Beach

Booked through FareHarbor, the island operators’ own booking system. HHI.com may earn a commission.

Island Head Transportation meets flights at the island airport and drives you to your rental, and back for your flight home; book it above. Licensed taxis wait at the stand to the right as you leave the terminal: Ferguson Transportation, (843) 842-8088; Apple Transportation, (843) 715-3504; and Native Islander’s Transportation, (843) 384-1403. Uber and Lyft pick up just outside the terminal exit, and most hotels and villas on the island do not run an airport shuttle.

The airport is on Beach City Road at the north end of the island, a few minutes from the bridges and about 20 minutes from Coligny and the south-end beaches by Cross Island Parkway. The Hilton Head Island map shows where your rental is.

Hilton Head airport parking is one lot in front of the commercial terminal at 120 Beach City Road, at the same rates by the hour and the day, plus taxes and fees. Pay by scanning a QR code posted in the lot, or by card at the exit gate. The cell phone lot is for waiting only, with no overnight parking, and the rental car and employee lots tow. Private and charter flyers park at General Aviation, 52 Gateway Circle.

Hilton Head Airport Code: HHH, and HXD

The Hilton Head airport code is HHH: that is the code to search for on an airline or booking site. Pilots and flight trackers use HXD (ICAO KHXD), the FAA’s identifier for the same field, which is why both turn up. HHI is the island’s nickname, not an airport code, and the Savannah airport is SAV.

The Terminal at Hilton Head Island Airport

Beaufort County owns and runs the airport, and its terminal is small enough that the walk from the plane to the rental car takes minutes. There is one TSA checkpoint, free wifi, a bar and lounge, and an outdoor pet relief area. Travelers like the size: quick check-in, quick security and helpful staff. The complaint is the flights themselves, with delays and cancellations on the small regional routes, so leave a cushion before anything you cannot miss.

Dropping someone off? Arrive about 90 minutes before the flight, and when picking up, allow 15 to 30 minutes after landing for bags. Private jets use the general aviation terminal on Gateway Circle, on the other side of the field.
