What counts as oceanfront
Plenty of Hilton Head lodging is advertised as “beachfront” or “steps from the beach” and isn’t on the sand. Here the test is simple: the property has its own frontage on the Atlantic beach. Hotels that are a short walk or a bike ride away are not on the list.
Where a property has a beachfront pool or a private beach club but the buildings sit back from the water, it is left off. For hotels a few blocks from the sand, see the hotels page, which groups them by distance.
All of Hilton Head’s beaches are public up to the high-tide line, so the location matters most for convenience: chairs, umbrellas and a walk of a few steps rather than a few blocks.

Frequently Asked Questions
Which Hilton Head hotels are right on the beach?
Beach House (Coligny Beach), the Omni (Palmetto Dunes), Hilton Beachfront, the Westin (Port Royal) and Sonesta (Shipyard) are the hotel and resort options with their own beach frontage.
Which resort is closest to Coligny Beach?
Beach House sits directly on Coligny Beach, and Hilton Grand Vacations Club Ocean Oak and Marriott’s Grande Ocean are nearby on South Forest Beach Drive.
Are there oceanfront resorts in Hilton Head that aren’t hotels?
Yes. Timeshare resorts such as Marriott’s Grande Ocean and Barony Beach Club and Ocean Oak have oceanfront villas. Some rent to the public. There are also oceanfront vacation rentals managed by rental companies.
Are the hotels on the beach more expensive?
Generally yes, and more so in summer. Rates change by season and by room view, so compare oceanfront rooms with a garden- or pool-view room at the same hotel.
Is the beach public in front of these hotels?
Yes. South Carolina beaches are public up to the high-tide line, though the hotel’s chairs, umbrellas and cabanas are for its guests.
