The shops at Coligny Plaza are the closest thing Hilton Head has to a downtown: a low, open-air run of boutiques, beachwear shops, gift stores and candy counters at the south end of Forest Beach, a few minutes’ walk from Coligny Beach Park. The Richardson family opened the plaza in 1956 with the island’s first grocery store, and it is still family-run. Most of the shops are independent, and they sell what people want on a beach holiday: swimwear, resort clothes, souvenirs, toys and things to take home.
