Assisted Living on Hilton Head Island

Hilton Head has thirteen senior-living communities, health centers and care programs, all of them north of Sea Pines and most within a few minutes of Hilton Head Hospital. Village Cove and The Pines are the island’s two assisted living communities; both are near the hospital, and The Pines adds a memory-care unit.

Assisted living and memory care on Beach City Road at the north end, on the site of the former Bloom at Hilton Head.

Two more places give assisted living without being assisted-living buildings. The Bayshore brings four levels of assisted-living care to residents in their own independent-living apartment, so nobody moves to get help. Broad Creek Care Center at TidePointe has an assisted-living wing alongside its nursing unit; TidePointe members come first.

The Island Cove at Hilton Head (15 Main St, formerly Brookdale Hilton Head) has closed permanently. Older directory listings still show it.

Independent Living and Senior Apartments

Both rent by the month, with no entrance fee: senior apartments with dining, housekeeping and activities. The three continuing care communities below also start you in independent living. All five are compared on the independent living page.

Three island communities sell a contract for the rest of your life: you move in to independent living and, if you need more care later, the community’s own health center provides it. TidePointe has Broad Creek Care Center, The Cypress has The Preston Health Center and The Seabrook has Fraser Health Center. How the entrance fee and the care contract work, and how the three compare, is on the Hilton Head CCRC page.

Three more have a secure memory-care unit inside a larger building: The Pines at Hilton Head, The Dogwood at The Preston Health Center and Fraser Health Center at The Seabrook. Memory Matters is not a residence: it runs a weekday day program and caregiver support. All of them are compared on the memory care page.

300 Woodhaven Dr, Hilton Head Island, SC 29928

The Seabrook’s 33-bed nonprofit health center: skilled nursing, long-term care, short-term rehab and memory care.

Hilton Head has one stand-alone nursing home, Life Care Center, near Hilton Head Hospital. The other three are the health centers of the continuing care communities. Preston (58 beds) and Broad Creek (25 skilled-nursing beds) both admit people who don’t live in the community, usually for short-term rehab after a hospital stay; residents come first. Fraser Health Center, The Seabrook’s, has 33 Medicare-certified beds; call it to ask about admission from outside.

Going from the hospital to rehab? The hospital’s discharge planners place patients, so name the center you want early. Hospitals and urgent care are on the Hilton Head hospitals page.

Home Care, Hospice and Respite Care

Home care. Medicare-certified home health agencies (nursing and therapy ordered by a doctor) and private-pay home-care agencies (help with bathing, meals and errands) both serve the island from offices in Hilton Head and Bluffton. South Carolina licenses in-home care providers, so ask any agency for its state license before it starts.

Hospice. Hospice care comes to the patient: at home, in an assisted-living apartment or in one of the nursing centers above. Your doctor or the hospital’s discharge planner makes the referral, and Medicare covers it for patients who qualify.

Respite care. For a family caregiver who needs a break, ask the assisted-living and memory-care communities above about a short furnished stay, which most offer when they have a room free. For a few hours a day instead, Memory Matters runs its day program Monday to Friday, 9:30 to 3:30.

Retiring to Hilton Head, and Bluffton Options

Looking for a place to retire rather than a place to get care? 55-plus neighborhoods such as Sun City Hilton Head and Latitude Margaritaville are just across the bridges, and the island’s own neighborhoods are compared on living in Hilton Head. The Cypress is the one community on this page where you buy your home, inside Hilton Head Plantation.

Bluffton, 20 minutes inland, has more assisted living and memory care communities. They are on senior living in Bluffton.
