Getting Around Hilton Head Island

Catch the Breeze: the island’s free trolley

Bike the pathways, ride the free Breeze trolley in summer, rent a street-legal golf cart, or call a cab: every way around Hilton Head.

Book Golf Carts, Bikes and Airport Rides

Booked through FareHarbor, the island operators’ own booking system. HHI.com may earn a commission.

Golf carts and bikes are delivered to most rentals; book a few days ahead in summer, when the island runs out of carts. The airport rides are to and from Hilton Head’s own airport; for Savannah, see Savannah airport to Hilton Head.

Getting Around Hilton Head: The Options

Bike

Best for most visitors

Flat, shaded and 64 miles of paved pathway: the easiest way to reach the beach, dinner and the shops. Rental companies deliver to the door. See bike rentals.

Breeze trolley

Free, in season

Two routes link Coligny, the south end, Shelter Cove and the mid-island hotels, 1 to 10 p.m. from April to Labor Day. Routes and stops are on the Hilton Head trolley.

Golf cart

Fun for short hops

Street-legal carts and Mokes go on roads posted 35 mph or less, never on the pathways. Renters and rules are on golf cart rentals.

Taxi or Uber

For evenings out

Uber and Lyft work on the island; waits run long late at night. Local cabs take calls around the clock.

Car

For day trips

The only way to Savannah, Bluffton or Beaufort on your own schedule. Beach lots charge by the hour in season: see Hilton Head parking.

Bus

Built for commuters

Palmetto Breeze runs weekday buses for island workers. Useful for a visitor only on a few routes, below.

Getting around Hilton Head is easier than the size of the island suggests. It is about 12 miles long, and most of what visitors want sits along the beach side between Sea Pines and Folly Field. Plenty of families park the car on day one and ride bikes the rest of the week. Where you’re staying matters most: the Hilton Head Island map shows how the areas fit together.

Palmetto Breeze Transit is the public bus system of the Lowcountry Regional Transportation Authority, which serves Beaufort, Jasper, Colleton, Hampton and Allendale counties. On Hilton Head its buses are mostly there to bring workers to island jobs: commuter routes from as far as Walterboro and Allendale feed transfer routes that reach the resorts, Sea Pines and the hospital. It also runs the free Breeze trolley and the summer beach shuttles for the Town.

Fares: the Bluffton Breeze and Okatie Breeze cost $1 a trip, children under 43 inches ride free with a paying adult, and ADA paratransit is $2 a trip after an application. Commuter tickets (one-way, weekly and monthly) sell in the Token Transit app. In early 2026 the agency warned that weekend commuter service could be cut if funding fell short, so check the Palmetto Breeze bus schedule at palmettobreezetransit.com before you count on a weekend bus. The office is at 25 Benton Field Road in Bluffton, (843) 757-5782, closed weekends and holidays.

Hilton Head Public Transportation for Visitors

For a visitor, Hilton Head public transportation comes down to two free services, both seasonal. The Breeze trolley runs from April 11 to Labor Day in 2026, 1 to 10 p.m. (11 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays), about every 30 minutes, and you can watch it coming in the CatchTheBreeze app. The beach shuttle runs from the free lot at the USCB campus, 1 Sandshark Drive, to Coligny Beach Park on summer weekends and holidays, 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.

The year-round buses run on worker schedules, early mornings and late afternoons on weekdays, so they rarely fit a vacation day. There is no public bus from either airport to the island: book a shuttle or car service instead.

Taxis, Uber and Car Services

Hilton Head taxis work by phone, not by street hail. Yellow Transportation has run cabs on the island since 1989 and answers around the clock at (843) 686-6666, including runs to the Hilton Head and Savannah airports. The cabs licensed at the island airport are Ferguson Transportation, (843) 842-8088; Apple Transportation, (843) 715-3504; and Native Islander’s Transportation, (843) 384-1403.

Uber and Lyft both work on Hilton Head, and a ride is easy to find around Coligny and Shelter Cove in the evening. Early-morning and late-night waits can be long, so for a dawn flight book a car service; the local drivers are compared on Savannah airport to Hilton Head.

Biking the Island’s 64 Miles of Pathways

The Town keeps 64 miles of public pathways, paved and mostly separate from the road, plus the hard-packed beach at low tide. Class 1 and class 2 e-bikes are allowed on the pathways; golf carts are not. Most rental companies deliver bikes, helmets and trailers to your rental and collect them at the end of the week. Compare them on Hilton Head bike rentals, and find routes on biking on Hilton Head.

Rental Cars and Driving on the Island

Two roads carry nearly everything. William Hilton Parkway (US 278 Business) loops the island from the bridges to Sea Pines Circle, and the Cross Island Parkway cuts across Broad Creek from mid-island to the south end. Summer Saturdays, when rentals turn over, are the slowest days on both. Rental cars are at both airports: see Savannah airport car rental and Hilton Head airport. Gated communities such as Sea Pines charge a daily gate fee to drivers who aren’t staying there.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is there public transportation on Hilton Head Island?

Yes, but it is limited. Palmetto Breeze Transit runs commuter buses and, from April to Labor Day, the free Breeze trolley and a free beach shuttle to Coligny. Most visitors get around by bike, golf cart or car.

What is Palmetto Breeze Transit?

The regional bus service of the Lowcountry Regional Transportation Authority. It runs commuter routes into Hilton Head, buses in Bluffton, and the free Breeze trolley on the island. Call (843) 757-5782.

Do you need a car on Hilton Head?

Not if you stay near the beach and are happy on a bike, the summer trolley and the odd Uber. A car helps for day trips, groceries in bulk and anyone staying mid-island or in a gated community far from the beach.

Is there Uber on Hilton Head Island?

Yes. Uber and Lyft both operate, with longer waits late at night and early in the morning. Local cabs such as Yellow Transportation, (843) 686-6666, take calls around the clock.

Can you drive a golf cart on Hilton Head?

Only a registered golf cart (in daylight) or a street-legal low-speed vehicle, and only on roads posted 35 mph or less. Both are banned from the public pathways.
