Hilton Head has two kinds of tennis: free public courts run by the Town, and the resort and plantation clubs, where you pay for court time, clinics and lessons. You do not have to be staying at a resort to play at most of them.
Public Tennis Courts on Hilton Head
The public tennis courts on Hilton Head Island are the Town’s, and they cost nothing. Chaplin has six courts; the Cordillo courts on the south end, off Pope Avenue, add four that are also striped for pickleball. Bring your own balls and expect to wait on a busy afternoon in season.

Are there public tennis courts on Hilton Head Island?
Yes. The Town runs free public courts at Chaplin Community Park (six courts) and at Cordillo, on the south end off Pope Avenue (four courts also striped for pickleball). The Island Recreation Center, (843) 681-7273, handles reservations.
Do you have to be a guest to play at a resort tennis center?
Not at most of them. Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes and Van der Meer sell clinics, lessons and court time to visitors who are not staying there; check each club’s page for what it offers.
