Dog-Friendly Hilton Head Island: Beaches, Restaurants and Rules
Jack Found a Friend on the Beach at Hilton Head Island SC
Where your dog can go on Hilton Head Island: every public beach, patios, a dog park and dog-friendly stays.
Hilton Head is an easy island to bring a dog to. Every public beach allows dogs under rules that change with the season, a handful of restaurants and breweries welcome them on the patio, the Town has one fenced dog park, and plenty of rentals take pets. This guide pulls the island’s dog pages together, with the one trap to avoid: Pinckney Island does not allow dogs on its trails.
Hilton Head Dog Rules and Dog-Friendly Beaches
There is no separate dog beach: every public beach follows the same Town rules, set by four date ranges. From October 1 through March 31 dogs can be on the beach at any hour on a leash or under voice control. In spring, from April 1 until the Thursday before Memorial Day, and again from the Tuesday after Labor Day through September 30, dogs must be on a leash between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. and may be under voice control outside those hours. The peak window, from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day, allows no dogs on the beach from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., so a summer beach day with a dog means early morning or evening.

Memorial Day and Labor Day move each year, so the season 2, 3 and 4 edges shift a few days. Season 3 (no dogs midday) runs May 22 – Sep 7 in 2026 and May 28 – Sep 6 in 2027.
One small stretch of shoreline near the mouth of Fish Haul Creek, beside Historic Mitchelville Freedom Park, is closed to dogs all year to protect shorebirds. Everything else, including Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park and Folly Field Beach Park, follows the calendar above. Private, gated communities set their own pet rules. Bring fresh water and pick up after your dog, and keep to the tide line where the sand is cooler on a hot afternoon.

Restaurants With Dog-Friendly Patios
These eight restaurants and two breweries list or are praised for dog-friendly outdoor seating. Tables are outside, so a dog on the patio is welcome while the kitchen stays dog-free. Call ahead for a busy evening, and keep your dog leashed. The full list, with more detail on each, is on dog-friendly restaurants on Hilton Head.

Hilton Head Dog Park and Parks That Welcome Dogs
The Town’s only dog park is at Chaplin Community Park: fenced, with shade, drinking water and a separate section for small dogs. Crossings Park has no dog park, but its open meadow and woodland trails are popular for walking dogs on a leash. Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge is the exception: the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service does not allow dogs or other pets on any refuge trail or beach, so leave the dog at the rental.

Where to Stay With Your Dog
Pet policies and fees differ by property, so check the listing before you book, and tell the manager how many dogs and how large. The vacation rentals page lists homes and condos that take dogs, and the resorts, hotels and inns page does the same for lodging. Rental managers: pet-friendly listings answer one of the most common questions from guests booking with a dog, and a short house guide with the beach rules above and the nearest vet is one the guest will actually read.

Boarding, Grooming and Vets for Visiting Dogs
If you need somewhere for the dog while you go out, Red Rover is the lodge visitors most often use for a day or two of daycare, and the pet services guide lists the island’s boarders, groomers and vets. Reviews of the island’s vets describe dogs that swallowed sand or salt water at the beach and were seen the same day, so know which clinic you would call. The 24-hour emergency hospital is in Bluffton, on the Bluffton pet services page.
