Hilton Head Beach Parking and Public Access

The free lot, the USCB overflow lot and the weekend shuttle between them.

Most Hilton Head Island parking questions are about the beach. The Town’s beach lots charge by the hour from March 1 through Labor Day, 7 a.m. to 5 p.m., and are free the rest of the time; Coligny Beach Park is free all year. You pay on your phone (text “HHI” to the number on the lot’s sign or scan its QR code), with no app to download and no cash. Residents with the Town’s free beach permit don’t pay. Every lot, with spaces and addresses, is on Hilton Head beach parking and public access.

There is no free overnight parking in Hilton Head that we could find. The Town’s beach parks close at 10 p.m. (6 p.m. in winter) and reopen at 6 a.m., so a car or van can’t stay in a beach lot overnight. If you are traveling by RV or van, book a site at one of the three RV parks above. Staying in a rental? Park where your rental tells you to (below).

Parking at Vacation Rentals: The 2026 Rules

The Town’s short-term rental rules that took effect on May 1, 2026 cap a rental home’s outside parking at six spaces, and require owners to tell guests where they may and may not park. Rentals whose permits were approved earlier have until May 1, 2027 to comply. For guests, that means checking the house rules before you bring a second or third car, a boat trailer or a rented golf cart: parking on the street or the grass can earn a ticket.

Owners and managers: put the parking answer in the booking confirmation and the welcome book, with the number of spaces, where they are, and the nearest public lot for extra cars. Gated communities have their own rules on top of the Town’s.

Skip the Parking: Trolley, Shuttle and Bikes

In summer the free Breeze trolley runs to Coligny Beach Park every afternoon and evening, and on weekends a free shuttle links the USCB campus lot to Coligny. Bikes are the other answer: the beach lots fill by mid-morning in July, and a bike never needs a space. See bike rentals and the rest of getting around Hilton Head.
