Hilton Head Dog-Friendly Beach Guide

There’s no dedicated “dog beach” on Hilton Head Island — every public beach, from Coligny to Fish Haul, falls under the same Town ordinance, and dogs are welcome on all of them. What actually changes is the time of day and the time of year: the leash rule, and whether dogs are allowed on the sand at all during midday, both shift through four seasonal windows rather than a simple “summer vs. winter” split. Here’s exactly when your dog can be on the beach, on or off leash, plus the one spot with a real restriction.

Hilton Head’s Dog Beach Rules, by Season

The Town of Hilton Head Island sets dog access by four date ranges, each with its own hours. Outside those windows, a leash or reliable voice control is always required — dogs are never allowed to roam a Hilton Head beach unsupervised.

• October 1 – March 31: Dogs allowed on the beach anytime, on leash or under voice control.

• April 1 – the Thursday before Memorial Day: On leash only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; leash or voice control the rest of the day.

• Friday before Memorial Day – Labor Day (peak summer): Dogs are not allowed on the beach at all from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; leash or voice control the rest of the day.

• The Tuesday after Labor Day – September 30: On leash only from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; leash or voice control the rest of the day.

That peak-summer window is the one visitors most often get wrong: it isn’t “leashed only” the way the shoulder seasons are — dogs can’t be on the beach at all between 10 a.m. and 5 p.m. from the Friday before Memorial Day through Labor Day. Plan a morning or evening beach walk with your dog if your trip falls in that stretch.

Which Hilton Head Beaches Allow Dogs

All of them. The seasonal hours above apply island-wide, at every public access point — Coligny Beach Park, Driessen Beach Park, Folly Field Beach Park, Burke’s Beach, Fish Haul Beach Park, Alder Lane Beach Access, Forest Beach, and Singleton Beach — plus Islanders Beach Park once it reopens from its current construction closure. Where Dogs Aren’t Allowed: the Fish Haul Creek Area

The one real exception is a restricted zone near Fish Haul Creek, at the north end of Fish Haul Beach Park — roughly two football fields long, starting about 600 feet from the park’s public access point. The Town put the restriction in place to protect threatened shorebirds that nest and feed in that stretch, and it’s marked on-site with “Animals Prohibited Area” signage. It’s worth knowing before you go, since nothing about the rest of the seasonal rules above would tell you this one small area is off-limits to pets.

Cleaning Up and Staying Off Wildlife

Pet waste has to be picked up and disposed of properly — it’s a Town rule, not just a courtesy, and it’s enforced the same as the leash requirements. It’s also illegal to let a pet chase or harass wildlife, which matters most around the shorebird nesting areas like Fish Haul Creek above. Both the Beaufort County Sheriff’s Department and Town code enforcement patrol the beaches and can cite violations.
