Where the Pickleball Name Comes From

The game was invented in 1965 on Bainbridge Island, Washington, by three fathers looking for something to keep their families busy. The name has two stories. One says it came from the "pickle boat," the leftover crew in a rowing race. The other says it was named for the family dog, Pickles. The founders themselves told both.

Where to Stay for Pickleball

Palmetto Dunes and Sea Pines both put courts a short walk from rentals; see the Palmetto Dunes guide and the Sea Pines tennis and pickleball page. For tennis, see the Hilton Head tennis guide.
