Ask two questions before you book: will they deliver to your address, and does your rental allow a cart? Sea Turtle Rentals, for one, delivers only to houses in two neighborhoods and never to condos, resorts or hotels. Book early for July and the holiday weeks: the island’s carts are few next to the number of renters.

Golf Cart Rules on Hilton Head: Where Carts Can Go

  • Registered carts only. A golf cart on a public road needs a South Carolina permit decal and registration, and proof of liability insurance. Rental carts come with theirs.

  • Drivers 16 and up, with a valid driver’s licence, carrying the registration and insurance card.

  • Roads posted 35 mph or less. You may cross a faster road at an intersection, but not drive along it: William Hilton Parkway and the Cross Island Parkway are off limits.

  • Daylight only, and within 4 miles of the cart’s registered address (or a gated community’s gate).

  • Children under 12 must wear a fastened seat belt.

  • Never on the pathways. Hilton Head bans golf carts from its 64 miles of public pathways; bikes and class 1 and 2 e-bikes only.

South Carolina rewrote its golf cart law in 2025 and lets towns add their own limits on hours and places, so ask the rental company for the routes it recommends from your address. A street-legal LSV (below) is registered like a car instead.

What most companies here rent as a street-legal golf cart is a low-speed vehicle, or LSV: a factory-built four-wheeler that tops out at 20 to 25 mph, with headlights, turn signals, mirrors, a windshield, a seat belt at every seat and a VIN. It is titled, plated and insured like a car rather than carrying a golf cart permit, and it keeps to roads posted 35 mph or less, crossing bigger roads at intersections. A Moke is an open-sided LSV. A golf cart retrofitted with lights does not count as one.

Golf Carts at Condos, Resorts and Rental Homes

Many guests ask about carts before they arrive. If you manage rentals, tell them whether your complex allows a rental cart, where it can park and charge, and which of these companies deliver to your addresses: delivery areas differ, and several resorts and condo buildings don’t take carts at all. Under the Town’s 2026 short-term rental rules, owners already have to tell guests where they can park; a cart is one more vehicle in that answer (see rental parking rules). Frequently Asked Questions

Can you rent a golf cart on Hilton Head Island?

Yes. Host & Home, Wheelz of Hilton Head, Carolina Rides, Sea Turtle Rentals and Slow Rides rent street-legal carts or Mokes on the island, and Club Car of Hilton Head rents from Bluffton. Most deliver.

How much does a golf cart rental cost on Hilton Head?

Wheelz of Hilton Head lists its street-legal carts from $160. The booking cards above show current prices for Host & Home and Wheelz.

Are golf carts street legal on Hilton Head?

A registered golf cart may use roads posted 35 mph or less in daylight, crossing faster roads only at intersections. Street-legal LSVs are plated like cars but keep to the same 35 mph roads. Neither may use the public pathways.

How old do you have to be to drive a golf cart on Hilton Head?

At least 16, with a valid driver’s licence.

Can I drive a golf cart on William Hilton Parkway?

No. Its speed limit is above 35 mph, so carts and LSVs may only cross it at an intersection.
