This map of Hilton Head Plantation shows the places a visitor or new resident is usually looking for: the two gates, the four golf clubs, the association’s office and amenities, and Fort Mitchel. The Main Gate and the Cypress Gate

The Main Gate is on Whooping Crane Way, just past the roundabout where it meets North Main Street, a few hundred yards off William Hilton Parkway (US 278). It is the way in for most visitors, and the nearest gate to Bear Creek and the middle of the community. The Cypress Gate is on the west side, where Seabrook Drive meets Squire Pope Road, and it is the closer gate for Fort Mitchel, the Country Club of Hilton Head and the homes along Skull Creek. Both are staffed around the clock by the Hilton Head Plantation POA’s security officers.

Getting Around Inside the Gate

Whooping Crane Way runs north from the Main Gate through the middle of the community, and Seabrook Drive crosses it from the Cypress Gate, past the POA Service Center on Surrey Lane and Spring Lake, toward Dolphin Head. High Bluff Road serves Oyster Reef and Dolphin Head golf clubs on the east side, and Dolphin Head Drive runs out to the recreation area on Port Royal Sound. It is a big place, with about 72 miles of private roads and a 25 mph speed limit unless signs say otherwise, and from the Main Gate to Dolphin Head is a drive of several miles.

About 10 miles of leisure paths link the neighborhoods to the amenities, and they are for walking, running and bikes, not golf carts, mopeds or scooters. The association asks cyclists and runners to keep off the busiest roads, Whooping Crane Way, Dolphin Head Drive and Seabrook Drive, and anyone who leaves on foot or by bike needs the gate access code or their photo ID to get back in.

The property owners’ association publishes a detailed street map with every road, lot number, lagoon and leisure path, along with the fishing and leisure-path rules.
