Dolphin Head Park sits on a bluff overlooking Port Royal Sound, tucked inside Hilton Head Plantation on the island’s north end. It’s not a public ocean beach the way Coligny or Folly Field are — the park and the stretch of sound-side shoreline below it belong to the gated community around them, open to residents and their guests. If you’re picturing a spot to pull off the road and walk onto the sand, this isn’t it; this is the calm, marshy, sound-facing side of the island, and getting there by land means getting past the plantation’s gate first.

About Dolphin Head Park

Dolphin Head Park, also called the Dolphin Head Recreation Area or just Dolphin Head Rec Area, is a Hilton Head Plantation community amenity built on Dolphin Head Bluff. Instead of ocean surf, the shoreline here is tidal marsh and bluff, with oyster beds exposed at low tide — a place for a quiet walk or a sound-side view rather than swimming or body surfing. The park was recently renovated, and now has a rebuilt recreation building with a meeting room and kitchen, a picnic pavilion, a playground, a multi-use sport court, an open event lawn, and a boardwalk down to the water. The Bluff Walk, a shoreline path running most of a mile along the sound, connects to it as well.

Getting to Dolphin Head Park

By land, Dolphin Head Park is only reachable through Hilton Head Plantation’s gate, and the gate only lets through residents, their guests, and people with other legitimate business in the community — there’s no public parking lot or day-use pass the way there is at the town’s beach parks. The stretch of sound below the bluff is technically public land under South Carolina’s beach access laws, same as every shoreline on the island, but the only realistic way a non-resident reaches it is by boat, launched somewhere else on Port Royal Sound.

Not to be confused with the golf course
