South Beach — sometimes called South Beach Marina, South Beach Village, South Beach Marina Village, or just South Beach HHI (short for Hilton Head Island, the abbreviation locals and other visitors both use) — is the low-key waterfront corner of Sea Pines Plantation, tucked at the island’s southern tip on Braddock’s Cove and Calibogue Sound. It’s a New England-style marina village built around boat slips, a handful of restaurants and shops, and a tennis and pickleball club, with the ocean beach itself a short walk away. It’s a different spot from Sea Pines Beach Club, the resort’s main oceanfront day facility elsewhere in Sea Pines — South Beach is its own neighborhood, built around the marina rather than a beach pavilion.

Getting to South Beach

South Beach sits inside Sea Pines Plantation, so getting there by car means paying Sea Pines’ visitor gate fee — $10 per day for a standard two-axle vehicle, payable by cash or card at either the main Greenwood Drive gate or the Ocean Gate off Cordillo Parkway, both open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. Property owners, resort guests, and anyone with a Sea Pines rental reservation skip the fee. Once inside, South Beach is also reachable by bike or on foot along Sea Pines’ leisure-path network if you’re already staying in the plantation.

Shops and Restaurants at South Beach Marina

The marina village is best known for the Salty Dog Cafe, but it’s not the only place to eat — Kiwi’s Island Grill and Jake’s Pizza (below) are a short walk away, along with the Salty Dog Ice Cream Shop. Land’s End Tavern is temporarily closed for dining while Jake’s Cargo uses its building during the marina redevelopment, and the Wreck of the Salty Dog has been closed since 2024. For shopping, the marina has the Salty Dog T-Shirt Shop, Blue Water Bait & Tackle, Jake’s Cargo, and the South Beach General Store for groceries, beer and wine, and beach gear. Boat, kayak, and jet ski rentals, deep-sea fishing charters, and Calibogue Sound nature tours all run out of the marina docks as well.

Blue Water Bait & Tackle

Live bait, tackle and fishing charters at the marina, open daily from 8 a.m. to 9 p.m.

South Beach Racquet Club

South Beach Racquet Club, at 230 S. Sea Pines Drive, has been part of the neighborhood since 1986 — 13 Har-Tru clay courts plus dedicated pickleball courts, about 300 yards from the marina. You don’t need to be a Sea Pines property owner or resort guest to book a court; the club takes outside players.

Staying at South Beach

A handful of Sea Pines rental communities cluster around the marina, including South Beach Villas and the South Beach Club villas overlooking Calibogue Sound and the Atlantic, plus South Beach Inn right at the marina itself. All put the shops, restaurants, and racquet club within an easy walk, and the beach itself just beyond that.

For Sea Pines’ other beach access point, see Hilton Head’s beaches guide, and for a full rundown of where to eat across the neighborhood — South Beach included — see restaurants in Sea Pines. Sea Pines’ other waterfront harbor is the Harbour Town yacht basin, a separate destination with its own shops, restaurants, and lighthouse.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is South Beach Marina open to the public?

Yes — anyone can visit South Beach Marina’s shops, restaurants, and docks. Since it’s inside Sea Pines Plantation, day visitors arriving by car pay Sea Pines’ standard gate fee ($10/day); property owners, resort guests, and rental reservations are exempt.

Do I need a Sea Pines gate pass to get to South Beach?

By car, yes — a day pass ($10 for a standard vehicle) at the Greenwood Drive or Ocean Gate entrance, both open 7 a.m. to 11 p.m. If you’re already staying inside Sea Pines, South Beach is reachable by bike or on foot with no separate fee. Visiting a property owner? Pick up the pass they reserved for you at the Sea Pines Welcome Center.

What is South Beach Racquet Club?

A tennis and pickleball club at 230 S. Sea Pines Drive, near South Beach Marina, open since 1986 with 13 Har-Tru clay courts. Outside players are welcome — you don’t have to own property or be staying in Sea Pines to book a court.

Is South Beach the same as Sea Pines Beach Club?

No — they’re different places within Sea Pines. South Beach is the marina neighborhood at the plantation’s southern tip, built around boat slips, shops, and restaurants. Sea Pines Beach Club is a separate oceanfront day facility elsewhere in the resort.

Is South Beach Marina the same as the marina at Harbour Town?

No — Sea Pines has two separate waterfront marina areas. South Beach Marina is at the plantation’s southern tip on Braddock’s Cove, with Salty Dog Cafe, the racquet club, and the beach nearby. Harbour Town’s yacht basin is a different harbor, beside the lighthouse and Harbour Town’s own shops and restaurants.
