The Beach at South Beach, Sea Pines

South Beach is the stretch of sand at the very bottom of Hilton Head Island, at the southern tip of Sea Pines, where the ocean meets Calibogue Sound. It sits a couple of minutes’ walk from South Beach Marina Village, the cluster of shops and restaurants around the Salty Dog, and people use the one name for both. This page is about the beach: how you get onto it, and who can.

The short answer to South Beach Hilton Head beach access: the sand itself is public, but it sits inside a gated community, so everyone gets there through the Sea Pines gate first, and the paths across the dunes are there mainly for people staying nearby.

Beach Access at South Beach

There is no beach park here and no dedicated beach parking lot. The beach is reached on foot. From the marina village it is about a two-minute walk, and rental guides describe the access as a few steps from the Salty Dog. Parking on the road is not allowed anywhere in Sea Pines, so do not plan on pulling over near the dunes.

Throughout Sea Pines, the CSA (the community association) keeps a beach path roughly every tenth of a mile. It describes them as being for property owners and overnight guests who walk or bike to the beach. If you are renting a villa or house near the marina, that is you, and the beach is the easy part of the day.

South Beach Hilton Head Public Access

In South Carolina the beach is public from the water up to the high-water mark, and the Town of Hilton Head Island is plain that getting to it is often private. South Beach is a good example. A day visitor can buy a pass at the gate and walk down from the marina village, but Sea Pines builds its beach access around the people staying inside it. The free beach shuttle from Lot 8 goes only to the Beach Club, and it is for owners, their guests and renters, not day-pass holders.

South Beach, the Beach Club or Tower Beach?

Sea Pines has three beach options, and they suit different people. The Sea Pines Beach Club is the full-service one, with dining, chairs, restrooms and showers, but its parking is held for resort guests and owners during the day in season. Tower Beach, under the water tower on South Sea Pines Drive, is for property owners, and a guard checks IDs. South Beach is the one to pick if you want the beach and lunch in the same walk: the marina village’s restaurants are right behind you, and so is the Sea Pines restaurants guide.
