Where to Watch the Sunset on Hilton Head

The sun setting over the treeline across Squire Pope Creek

The beaches face east, so the best sunsets are on the island’s west side: the sound, the creeks and the marsh.

Hilton Head’s ocean beaches face the Atlantic, east and southeast, so the sun goes down behind the dunes rather than into the sea. The best sunsets on the island are on its back side, where Calibogue Sound, Skull Creek and Broad Creek open to the west. These are the places locals go, from a free pier to a dinner table on the docks.

Harbour Town and Calibogue Sound

Harbour Town, inside Sea Pines, looks west across Calibogue Sound toward Daufuskie Island, and the lighthouse and the yacht basin turn gold in the last hour of light. Sea Pines charges a gate fee per car. Walk out on the Harbour Town pier or take a bench along the docks.

Skull Creek on the North End

Skull Creek runs along the island’s west side, between Hilton Head and Pinckney Island. The restaurant docks off Hudson Road are the busy way to watch the sun go down over it, and a small Town park up the creek is the quiet way.

Marsh Sunsets and Bluffton

For a free sunset with birds instead of crowds, head to the salt marsh. The wildlife refuge just off the island and Oyster Factory Park on the May River in Old Town Bluffton are both free. The refuge closes at sunset, so arrive early.

Sunset From the Water

A boat puts you out on the sound with nothing in the way. Several companies run evening trips from Harbour Town, Shelter Cove and Skull Creek, and dolphins are often part of it. See Hilton Head sunset cruises for the boats and where they leave from.

Tips for Watching the Sunset

  • Check the sunset time for your date, and get there 30 to 45 minutes early. The color after the sun drops is often the best part.

  • Bring bug spray for the marsh and creek spots. No-see-ums come out at dusk, most of all in warm months.

  • On the beach, look back over the dunes: the sky over the ocean turns pink and orange even though the sun sets behind you.

  • Parks and the refuge close around dark, so plan your walk back to the car.
