Free Things to Do on Hilton Head Island

A salt marsh and tidal creek at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge

Hilton Head’s best things cost nothing: the beach, a wildlife refuge, a museum, a historic park and miles of bike path. The few catches, like the Sea Pines gate fee and beach parking meters, are spelled out below.

Beach Access Points

Every Hilton Head beach is public — here’s where the town’s access points are, what parking costs and when, and whether you need a permit.

Every beach on the island is public below the high-tide line, and walking on it costs nothing. Parking is the cost: Coligny Beach Park has the only completely free parking lot of the Town’s beach parks, while the others charge by the hour from March through Labor Day. The overflow lot and the free seasonal trolley are on the parking page when it fills.

Free Bike Paths

Biking on Hilton Head

Hilton Head has more than 60 miles of bike trails, plus a beach you can ride at low tide. Maps, path rules, e-bike rules, and where to rent or book a tour.

More than 60 miles of public pathways run along the main roads and out to the beaches, and riding them is free. Bringing your own bike is the cheap way; rental shops charge, but many deliver.

What Is Not Quite Free

Two things catch visitors out. Sea Pines charges visitors a gate fee of $10 per vehicle per day, which applies to Harbour Town and the Forest Preserve. And all of the Town’s beach parks except Coligny charge for parking by the hour from March through Labor Day. Walking or biking in avoids both; the seasonal trolley that serves Coligny is free for every rider.
