How Long Distance Moves Are Priced From Hilton Head
A local move is usually an hourly crew and truck; a long-distance move is priced by the weight or volume of what is on the truck and the miles it travels, plus packing, stairs, long carries and storage. A full-service long distance move, where the crew packs, loads, drives and unpacks, is the most hands-off version; All My Sons describes a “totally hands-off move” with its packing team, and the price rises with each step you hand over. Streamline, A Helping Hand and All My Sons each ask for the pickup and drop-off addresses before they quote, and A Helping Hand also asks for the home size.
The island adds three things to the quote: a gate pass if you live in a gated community (see gates and Daufuskie below), a raised house or condo stairs, and the season, since All My Sons suggests booking a few weeks ahead for dates near Thanksgiving or the end of a month.
Binding or Non-Binding Estimate for a Long Distance Move?
A binding estimate fixes the price for the items and services listed. A non-binding estimate is an approximation, and the bill follows the actual weight. On an out-of-state move with a non-binding estimate, the federal rule is that the mover cannot require more than 110% of the estimate at delivery; any balance can be billed at least 30 days later. Streamline says its quotes are bonded and valid for 14 days, and All My Sons explains both kinds on its Hilton Head page.
List everything you plan to move, including the garage, the lanai furniture and the shed, because an estimate is only as good as its inventory. Ask to see the estimate in writing before the truck is loaded.
Check a Long Distance Mover Before You Book
A mover that crosses state lines must be registered with the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration. Ask for the USDOT number and look it up on the FMCSA site. All My Sons also says to ask whether a company will handle the move with its own employees and trucks, since a broker arranges moves but does not perform them and the crew that arrives may be a company you never checked.
