Hilton Head Facts for Interior Design
- Older homes, dated rooms
- The median home on the island was built in 1987, and about 54% of the island’s homes went up in the 1980s and 1990s (as of 2024). Many are now on their second round of paint, flooring, window coverings and furniture.
- Condos and villas
- Nearly half of the island’s homes, about 47%, are in attached or multi-unit buildings such as villas, townhomes and condos (as of 2024). Rooms are smaller, and the association sets the rules for contractors and deliveries.
- Part-time homes
- About 1 in 4 homes in the Town of Hilton Head Island is held for seasonal, recreational or occasional use (as of 2024). A designer who works with owners who live elsewhere will usually show you the plan by email and video.

Interior Designer or Interior Decorator on Hilton Head?
Interior decorators on Hilton Head choose the look of a room: furniture, fabric, color, lighting, window coverings and accessories. Interior designers do that too, and many also plan the space itself, such as moving walls, kitchens, baths, flooring and lighting, and work with the builder. On the island the two overlap, and companies use both words for the same job. Interior Motives’ clients call its owner a decorator and a designer. Senteriors lists space planning, new construction, finish selections and project management on its website. J. Banks Design is a design firm with a showroom, and John Kilmer Fine Interiors offers design help with the furniture it sells.
A simple way to choose: if you are changing walls, kitchens or baths, start with a designer who works on new construction and renovation, such as Interiors By Donna Coudés or Senteriors, and read our guides to kitchen remodeling and bathroom remodeling. If the structure stays and you want the rooms furnished, a decorator or a furniture showroom with a design team is the shorter path. For a floor plan or an addition, see architects on Hilton Head.
Ask each one how it charges (by the hour, a flat design fee, or a markup on what it buys for you), what a first meeting costs, and whether it works remotely if you live elsewhere. Christina Richardson Interiors is described by clients as doing a virtual redesign of a whole house.
Window Treatments on Hilton Head: Blinds, Shades and Drapery
Most companies here sell blinds and shades, and they differ in what else they do. Liberty Wallcoverings and Budget Blinds both sell Hunter Douglas products, such as Pirouette shades. Carolina Window Designs and Just Cushions make custom draperies in their own sewing rooms. Seaglass Windowscapes adds awnings, hurricane shutters and Bahama shutters outdoors. Palmetto Upholstery also lists custom drapery and cornices.
Liberty offers professional measuring and Budget Blinds an in-home consultation, so ask each company who measures before you buy. What to ask: whether the price includes measuring and installation, how long the order takes from signed quote to install, whether the treatment can be motorized, and what the warranty covers. Budget Blinds describes a 5-year warranty on most new products. For cleaning the glass behind them, see window cleaning on Hilton Head, and for new windows, glass and windows.
Plantation Shutters on Hilton Head Island
Plantation shutters on Hilton Head are sold by Budget Blinds, Seaglass Windowscapes, Liberty Wallcoverings and Carolina Window Designs, and a Seaglass reviewer describes plantation shutters and custom drapes installed together. Ask whether the shutters are made to your window measurements, what material they are made of, and how the louvers are controlled. Budget Blinds’ installer showed one reviewer how to open and close the shutters after the job. Seaglass also lists hurricane and Bahama shutters, which are a different product from an indoor plantation shutter, so say which one you want when you call.
If you rent your home out, ask the company about treatments that stand up to guests, and ask your handyman or property manager who has the codes for the unit. In a community with an architectural review board, such as Sea Pines or Palmetto Dunes, inside window treatments rarely need approval, but outdoor shutters and awnings may: check your community’s rules first.
Upholstery on Hilton Head: Reupholstery, Cushions and Marine Canvas
For reupholstery on Hilton Head, the workrooms differ in what they take and how they work. Palmetto Upholstery welcomes the fabric you bring and says its standard turnaround is one to two weeks. Just Cushions says on its website that it no longer works with customer-supplied fabric, so you choose from its own. Custom Upholstery-Willie Young is a one-person shop with reviews for couches, chairs and curtain hemming, and Seabreeze Upholstery has a large fabric selection in its shop. Carolina Canvas & Upholstery does the outdoor side: boat seats, bimini tops, awnings and golf cart seats.
Ask each shop what it charges for labor and what for the fabric, since fabric usually moves the price most. Ask how long the piece is out of your house, and whether foam, springs and webbing are replaced. Reviewers describe three eighty-year-old chairs rebuilt and still looking original, and leather chairs given new springs and foam. Cushions for outdoor furniture are a good place to ask about fabric made for the sun and salt air.
Furniture Repair and Refinishing on Hilton Head
We did not find a Hilton Head company that lists only furniture refinishing, so for furniture repair on Hilton Head, start with the upholstery workrooms. Palmetto Upholstery lists restoration, and its reviewers describe chair bases that were falling apart made sturdy again. Willie Young’s reviewers describe a sleeper sofa saved from renters’ damage. For a table, a chest or a cabinet, a handyman can handle small repairs: see handyman services on Hilton Head Island. For cabinet doors and boxes, see cabinets on Hilton Head, and for floors, flooring.
Design a Closet and Hang Art on Hilton Head
To design a closet on Hilton Head, call a closet company rather than a general designer: Inspired Closets (free in-home design, 3D renderings) and Signature Closets of the Low Country (built in its island shop). See custom closets on Hilton Head for the whole list.
For art installation on Hilton Head, no company on this page does only that. The designers on this page source and place art with a room: John Kilmer’s reviewers mention rugs, art and lighting from its showroom. Hanging a heavy mirror or a gallery wall is the work of a handyman, listed on our handyman page, and valuable pieces are best hung by the designer or gallery that sold them. If a wall is painted first, see painters on Hilton Head.
Interior Design for a Condo, Villa or Second Home on Hilton Head
Nearly half of the island’s homes are in attached or multi-unit buildings, and about 1 in 4 homes is a part-time home. For a condo or villa, ask the association or property manager what contractors and delivery trucks need: usually a certificate of insurance, a reserved elevator or loading time and approved working hours. If the home is in a gated community such as Sea Pines, Palmetto Dunes, Hilton Head Plantation, Long Cove, Indigo Run or Shipyard, tell the company early so it can get on the gate list.
If you live elsewhere most of the year, ask for a design plan you can approve remotely and an install week when you are on the island. For a home you rent out between your own stays, a designer can furnish it as a whole: see second homes on Hilton Head Island, and for the moving day, movers on Hilton Head.
Interior Design near Hilton Head: Bluffton, Okatie, Hardeeville and Daufuskie
Budget Blinds of Hilton Head Island lists Hilton Head, Daufuskie Island, Bluffton, Okatie, Hardeeville and Ridgeland among where it works, and Seaglass Windowscapes lists Bluffton, Hilton Head, Okatie, Hardeeville and Beaufort. Carolina Window Designs serves the island, Bluffton and the Lowcountry, and Interiors By Donna Coudés names Beaufort and Haig Point projects. If you live on the mainland side, the Bluffton showrooms are closest, and the Bluffton side has its own list: interior designers in Bluffton. For Daufuskie, ask whether there is a trip charge and how the materials get there.
What Interior Design and Window Treatments Cost on Hilton Head
Most of the companies here quote after a visit, so we do not give an island average. What moves the price for a designer: the number of rooms, whether you buy furniture through the designer, and whether the job includes construction drawings or project management. For window treatments: the number and size of windows, the product, motorization and the fabric of a drapery. For upholstery: the fabric, the amount of foam and spring work, and the piece itself.
Get two quotes in writing, with the measuring and installation shown on separate lines, and ask what the warranty or guarantee covers. Several companies here give free estimates or consultations: Liberty, Budget Blinds and Inspired Closets all say so on their websites.
