Memory Matters Hilton Head: A Day Program, Not a Residence

Memory Matters is a nonprofit, founded in 1997, that runs a social day program for people in the early to middle stages of dementia, plus classes and support for the family members who care for them. It is at 117 William Hilton Parkway, and nobody lives there: participants come on weekdays, from 9:30 to 3:30, and go home afterward. Families can use it to keep a parent at home longer, or to give a caregiver a working day while they decide about residential care.

Programs and Caregiver Support

The day program has structured activities for people with memory loss, and Memory Matters runs brain-health education, free memory screenings at partner locations and caregiver education, including the Savvy Caregiver course that reviewers praise. Support groups let family caregivers talk with others in the same position. A transport partnership with Palmetto Breeze helps participants get to the program. There is a second Memory Matters location at 2 Westbury Park Way in Bluffton; see Bluffton senior living.

When Residential Memory Care Is the Next Step

When a day program no longer covers the need, Harbor Cove Memory Care and the memory-care wing at The Pines at Hilton Head are the island’s residential options, with more on the memory care page.
