Where Can You Drive a Golf Cart on Hilton Head Island?
Golf carts are not allowed on US 278, the William Hilton Parkway that crosses the island, or on the beaches. The Town of Hilton Head Island also bars them from its public pathways and bike lanes; the Town’s Municipal Code §12-1-511 prohibits motor vehicles on publicly owned pathways, with exceptions for things like wheelchairs, emergency vehicles and authorized maintenance vehicles.
That leaves local streets posted 35 mph or less, and the private roads inside the plantations. Inside Sea Pines, Hilton Head Plantation and the other communities, the property owners association sets the rules for carts on its roads and its private pathways, so ask your association or your rental company before you drive.
Statewide, South Carolina Code §56-2-90 has applied since May 22, 2025. The owner needs an SCDMV permit decal, registration and insurance, the driver must be 16 or older with a license, children under 12 wear a seat belt, and the cart stays within 4 miles of the registered address or the entrance to a gated community. Towns can set their own hours and locations on top of that.
Buying a Golf Cart for Hilton Head: New, Used or Refurbished
A new cart costs the most and comes with a warranty. A used or refurbished cart costs less, and the battery pack is the thing to check: a cart on its original lead-acid batteries may need a new set soon, and a cart with lithium batteries won’t. Ask for the cart’s age, the battery type and age, and whether it comes with a charger.
The dealers above are off the island, so ask who delivers across the bridge, who services the cart afterward and whether they come to your house. If you want a street-legal vehicle that is plated like a car, ask about a low-speed vehicle, which is registered and insured as a vehicle rather than as a golf cart and tops out at about 25 mph.
