What the World Affairs Council of Hilton Head Does

The World Affairs Council of Hilton Head is a nonprofit, nonpartisan group that brings speakers on foreign policy and world events to the island. It began in 1981 as the Foreign Affairs Seminar, a small group of islanders meeting at the Hilton Head library, and in 2005 it joined the World Affairs Councils of America, took its current name and became a 501(c)(3) nonprofit. Its office is at 19 Bow Circle, near Sea Pines Circle.

The Distinguished Speaker Series

The council’s main program meets on the first and third Fridays of each month from October through May at First Presbyterian Church, 540 William Hilton Parkway, usually at 10 a.m. Non-members can attend as guests; the council’s calendar lists each date and speaker.

Discussion Groups and Student Programs

Members also meet in Great Decisions discussion groups and a book club, and a Global Speakers Program brings international speakers twice a year. For students, the council supports Model UN and Academic WorldQuest, a world-affairs quiz competition.

It is one of the island’s many clubs; others are on clubs on Hilton Head.
