Home Care, Home Health or Hospice: Which Do You Need?
Home care (also called in-home care or private-duty care) is help with daily life: bathing, dressing, meals, medication reminders, driving to appointments and company. It is paid by the hour, usually from savings or long-term-care insurance, and can run from a few hours a week to around the clock.
Home health is skilled nursing and therapy a doctor orders for a set time. Hospice is comfort care for someone with a serious illness who is no longer seeking a cure. A family often uses two at once: hospice or home health for the medical visits, and a home care agency for the hours in between.
What Home Care Costs on Hilton Head, and Who Pays
The island’s agencies quote after a free in-home assessment, and most set a minimum visit length, often a few hours. Ask for the hourly rate, the night and weekend rate, the live-in or 24-hour rate, and how much notice you need to give to change the schedule or stop.
Medicare does not pay for home care by the hour. Long-term-care insurance usually does, and veterans and surviving spouses may qualify for the VA’s Aid and Attendance benefit. Some Medicare Advantage plans include a few hours of help at home, so ask the plan.
How to Choose a Home Care Agency
Ask whether the caregivers are the agency’s employees (it then handles payroll, taxes and insurance) or are referred to you to hire. Ask for its South Carolina license, how caregivers are trained for dementia and for lifting, whether you can meet the caregiver first, and who comes if that caregiver is sick.
For family who live away, ask how the agency reports on each visit and how fast it answers the phone at night. Many agencies on this page also serve Daufuskie Island; ask about the ferry time and cost.
When Home Care Isn’t Enough
For someone living with dementia, Memory Matters runs a day program on William Hilton Parkway, and the island’s assisted living and memory care communities take short respite stays. When care at home is around the clock, compare the cost with assisted living on Hilton Head or memory care. Agencies in town are on home care in Bluffton.
