Wind and Hail Cover on the Coast
Some private insurers leave wind and hail out of homeowners policies near the ocean. For those homes, South Carolina runs the South Carolina Wind and Hail Underwriting Association, known as the wind pool. It covers the coastal area of five counties, and in Beaufort County that means everything east of the Intracoastal Waterway, which takes in all of Hilton Head Island. A home must meet building codes and flood-zone rules to qualify. Island agents can say whether a policy includes wind or needs a separate wind pool policy.
Flood Insurance on Hilton Head Island
Most homeowners policies do not cover flooding. Flood cover is a separate policy, either through the National Flood Insurance Program, which FEMA runs, or from a private flood insurer. A new National Flood Insurance Program policy usually takes 30 days to start, so it cannot be bought once a storm is on the way. Storm season itself is covered on hurricanes on Hilton Head.
Business Insurance and Employee Benefits
Kinghorn Insurance Agency and Windermere Insurance Group both have employee benefits teams for group health, dental and vision plans. Correll writes business policies for contractors and nonprofits, and Hilton Head Insurance & Brokerage places business cover alongside home and auto.
