Moss Creek Golf Club, Hilton Head

Devil’s Elbow South opened in 1975 and is the better known of the two. Much of it runs along salt marsh beside the Intracoastal Waterway and Mackay Creek, and Golf Digest called it “a beauty with a bite.” It is a par 72 that the USGA’s course rating database lists at 6,878 yards from the Championship tees, rated 74.2 with a slope of 140.

Devil’s Elbow North is also a par 72. Its longest rated tees, the Fazio tees, play 6,627 yards, rated 73.2 with a slope of 134. GolfPass describes it as a shot-maker’s course, short and tight, with elevated greens. Both courses were designed by the uncle-and-nephew team of George and Tom Fazio.

Moss Creek is a private club, and there is no public tee-time booking. One club directory lists membership as invitation-only, so ask the club how it works. The Moss Creek community also has tennis, a fitness center, a lap pool and dining, according to its own site. The club’s address is 1523 Fording Island Road, with a Hilton Head Island mailing address. It calls itself the gateway to the island, and the community is a few minutes from the bridge. Other private clubs within reach include Belfair Golf Club, Berkeley Hall and Colleton River Club.
