Daufuskie Golf: Haig Point, Bloody Point and Melrose

One card, three courses. Haig Point is the only one taking play; the other two are listed here because people still search for them and deserve a straight answer.

Rees Jones built the Haig Point Signature Course in 1986 and came back in 2007 to rebuild the greens. It has 20 holes: the 8th and the 17th, both seaside par 3s, each have a second hole of their own, so the card can be played as the Calibogue or as the Haig. The Calibogue plays 7,314 yards from the Black tees at a par of 72, rated 76.6 with a slope of 146. There is a nine-hole short course, the Osprey, alongside it.

It is private. There are no public tee times, but the club says it welcomes a limited number of daily guests, and the ferry crossing from Hilton Head Island takes about 25 minutes. The Haig Point Club page has the scorecard, the details card and how members and guests get on.

Bloody Point opened in 1991, designed by Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish, on the island’s southern tip. It is closed. The property owners’ association and Beaufort County Council backed a zoning amendment for what the plan calls “the closure of the course and the conversion to a series of open spaces and linear parks with meadows and bicycle and pedestrian trails,” alongside an expanded inn, a village core and a beach club. So the course is not waiting to reopen — the land is becoming something else.

Melrose is the Jack Nicklaus course, opened in 1987, 7,081 yards at a par of 72, with its closing holes along the Atlantic. It was the resort’s course, and for most of the last decade it has been shut. Its own site now points at a reopening and lists a driving range as open, while third-party listings still show the course closed. We have not been able to confirm which is current, so if Melrose is the reason you are coming, call before you book a ferry.

There is no public rate card for golf on Daufuskie Island, because the one open course is a private club. Hilton Head golf-package operators sell rounds at Haig Point as part of a package, with the ferry included in the price — that is the usual way a visitor plays it, and the club’s own golf line, (843) 341-8192, is the other.
