What is the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate?

It started in 2012 with Puggy Blackmon, then the University of South Carolina’s director of golf operations, who wanted the women’s college game to get the same treatment the men’s tournaments got. He brought in Long Cove’s golf director, Bob Patton, for the course, and Darius Rucker — a South Carolina alum, and the Hootie of Hootie & the Blowfish — for the name and the star power. South Carolina has hosted it ever since.

You will see it written a few different ways. Some people search for the Darius Rucker Collegiate, others for the Darius Rucker Invitational; the official name is the Darius Rucker Intercollegiate, and it is a women’s college team championship, not a pro-am or a celebrity scramble. Rucker hosts it and plays a concert. He does not tee it up.

In 2022 it became the first all-women’s regular-season college golf tournament ever broadcast live in the United States, and it is still the only one. That is the thing worth knowing about this event: the field is routinely stronger than a lot of NCAA regionals, and more than 30 players who have competed here have gone on to the LPGA.

Fifty-four holes of stroke play — one round a day for three days, with both a team and an individual title. Each school plays five golfers and counts its best four scores each round. The field is 17 teams, and in a normal year 10 or 11 of them are ranked inside the national top 25, which is why coaches talk about this as one of the hardest fields anyone plays before the postseason.

The part that has nothing to do with golf: the night before the first round, Rucker plays a private concert for the players and coaches. The trophy is a signed guitar, and the winners get miniature glass replicas of it. That combination — a Grammy winner playing a private show, then a genuinely elite championship the next morning, with nobody charging at the gate — is not something the rest of college golf has.

Admission is free and there are no tickets — you can walk on and follow a group. Around 2,000 spectators do, across the three days, which is few enough that you can stand a few feet from players who will be on the LPGA within a year or two. All three rounds air live on Golf Channel; in 2026 the window was 2:30–5:30 p.m. ET each day, though exact times shift, so confirm closer to tournament week.

Early March is quiet on the island — well before the spring golf rush and two months before the RBC Heritage fills every rental south of the bridge. If you are building a trip around it, tee times at the island’s public courses are easy to get that week, which is not true in April.

What the leaderboards do not show is the shape of the thing over time: Alabama won five of the first seven, Duke went back-to-back in 2014 and 2015, and Wake Forest’s 2020 win came by 26 strokes — a margin nobody has come near since.

Host South Carolina went a long time without a winner here and then produced three individual champions in a row from 2023 — Louise Rydqvist shared medalist honors with Arkansas’s Kendall Todd in 2025, the same year LSU edged the Gamecocks on a tiebreaker for the team title.

All three rounds are played at Long Cove Club, on Broad Creek at the south end of Hilton Head Island. Blackmon picked it on purpose and it has never moved: a Pete and Alice Dye design from 1980–81, 7,094 yards and par 71 from the back tees, walkable, and routed through marsh and live oaks rather than around housing.
