First Tee of the Lowcountry is the local chapter of First Tee, the national youth program that teaches golf alongside values like integrity, respect and perseverance. Its Hilton Head campus sits on Gumtree Road next to the Boys & Girls Club, and it is not only for kids in the program: the par-3, the range and the 9-hole disc golf layout are open to anyone. Youth Golf Programs
The core program is a run of weekly Life Skills Experience classes, seven sessions long, with kids grouped by age: 6 to 9, 10 to 12, and 13 and up. A class covers real golf, from the rules and the vocabulary to how to plan a way around a course, and pairs it with the values First Tee is built on. Classes meet on the Hilton Head campus and at three courses on the mainland: Rose Hill Golf Club, The Landing at Pleasant Point and The Golf Club at Hilton Head Lakes. The chapter also teaches in schools and at youth centers, with classes in Bluffton, Beaufort, Ridgeland and Hardeeville, and it runs LPGA Girls Golf and PGA Junior League teams.
Registration is $80 a session, and the chapter says scholarships are easy to get for anyone who qualifies, including families in South Carolina’s free or reduced lunch program or going through a hard stretch. Registration is online, through the chapter’s own site.
The Par-3 Course, Range and Disc Golf
The six holes run from 53 to 119 yards, short enough for a first round and still useful practice for a wedge game. The range is 325 yards end to end, with unlimited balls, plus a chipping green and a putting green. Loaner clubs are there for kids and adults, so you can turn up without a set. A day of unlimited golf costs $20 for adults and $5 for anyone 17 or under; monthly and yearly passes are sold too. Kids in First Tee programs and active military families play free. The 9-hole disc golf course asks a $5 donation.
