Megabite Fishing Charters is Captain Kent Bird's light-tackle sportfishing business at Palmetto Bay Marina, running since 1995. Kent has lived on the island since 1970, and guests say he shares the island's history along with the fishing and that a small boat makes the trip more hands-on than a big one. Trips are by appointment.
The Boat and the Water
The boat is a 23-foot Parker SE Sportfish with a Yamaha 200 outboard. It takes up to six anglers, though four or fewer is more comfortable. Per the captain, it runs in nine inches of water and handles three to four-foot seas. Rods, reels, tackle, bait, ice and fishing licenses are provided, and you can bring your own gear. Bottlenose dolphins are a common sight.
What You Can Catch
The list on the site is redfish, tarpon, cobia, king mackerel, sharks and trout. Sharks come close to shore, and guests warn there is little room aboard to keep a big king mackerel. Call (843) 298-0448 to ask about trip lengths and rates.
