Carolina Rides rents street-legal electric vehicles from 59B New Orleans Road, at the south end of the island off Pope Avenue. The fleet is three vehicles: the open-sided Moke, the Oreion beach buggy and the six-seat Honor golf cart. All three run on battery, so there's no gas to buy, and the shop delivers and picks up around Hilton Head. It shares the address with Island Cruisers Bike Rental, and also rents in Charleston.
The Three Vehicles
Moke
Seats four, with British-classic styling and a striped bimini top
About 60 miles per charge
A popular pick for wedding photos
Oreion Beach Buggy
2+2 seating, built for couples
Top speed 55 mph, about 150 miles per charge
A modern take on a 1960s California buggy
Honor Six-Passenger
Seats six, with a fold-down rear seat for gear
About 50 miles per charge
A 33-inch light-up soundbar built in
Each vehicle can only drive on roads at or under its rated speed, and the shop publishes a map for each one showing which Hilton Head roads it can use. The Oreion can take roads up to 55 mph; the Moke and the Honor are limited to slower roads, so check a vehicle's map before planning a route. No vehicle may go on the beach, off road or through flooded streets, and doing so ends the rental with no refund.
