Squire Pope Community Park is a Town park on the north end of the island, at 133 Squire Pope Road, off William Hilton Parkway across from Blazing Star Lane. It is also known as the Squire Pope Rowing and Sailing Center and the Hilton Head Island Fishing Cooperative Park. It sits on Skull Creek, and its reason for being is getting onto the water.
What Is in the Park
Fishing pier: a long fixed pier into Skull Creek. More spots are on the Hilton Head fishing piers page.
Floating dock and kayak launch: for kayaks, paddleboards and rowing shells. No motorboats launch here. The launch on the fishing pier is ADA-accessible.
Picnic pavilion, grill and fire pit.
Playground, public art, restrooms, Wi-Fi and free parking.
Paddling Skull Creek
Skull Creek runs between Hilton Head and Pinckney Island, and the park is one of the few public places on the north end to put in a kayak. Bring your own boat, or see kayaking on Hilton Head for rentals and guided trips. Watch the tide: the current in the creek is strong when it is running.
The Fishing Cooperative
From 1966 to 1978 this was the home of the Hilton Head Fishing Cooperative, run by the island’s Gullah fishermen. An exhibit kiosk and a mural in the park tell the story. More of that history is on the Gullah Geechee culture page.
When to Go
The park is open 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. every day, and 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. once daylight saving time ends. Skull Creek is on the island’s west side, and the pier is a quiet place to watch the sun go down. More are on the Hilton Head sunset spots page.
