The Art League of Hilton Head is a nonprofit visual-arts group with two places to visit. The Art League Gallery is inside the Arts Center of Coastal Carolina at 14 Shelter Cove Lane, and the Art League Academy, where the classes are held, is on the south end at 106 Cordillo Parkway, near the corner of Deallyon Avenue. The details card on this page lists the Academy’s address and phone; the hours shown are the gallery’s. The League’s stated purpose is “inspiring visual arts for our community and its visitors through exhibitions, education and partnerships.”
The Gallery at Shelter Cove
The gallery shows work by more than 200 member artists in all media, and everything on display is for sale. Exhibits change monthly. It is open Monday to Saturday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m., and it opens 90 minutes before every Arts Center performance, so an evening at the theater can start with a look at the walls. Call the gallery on (843) 681-5060. The walls are named for Walter Greer, one of the League’s founding members and the island’s first resident artist, so you will see his name on the gallery.
Classes at the Academy
The Academy teaches art at every skill level, true beginners included, with classes led by professional educators across a range of media. The class list rotates monthly, so check the League’s site for the current schedule and to sign up. Call the Academy on (843) 842-5738 for office hours. It suits a visitor staying a week who wants to paint rather than just look.
Membership
Artists can join as members to show work in the gallery, and anyone can donate through the League’s site. If you would rather make something in an afternoon, Art Cafe is a paint-your-own pottery studio for all ages.
