Hilton Head Photography Spots: Where to Take Your Own

For sunrise, go to the ocean side. The beach faces the Atlantic, and at low tide the wet sand mirrors the sky. Coligny Beach Park and Folly Field Beach Park both have public parking and a boardwalk over the dunes.

For sunset, go to Harbour Town or South Beach in Sea Pines, which look west over Calibogue Sound. Anyone can enter Sea Pines with a day gate pass. A sunset cruise from Harbour Town puts the lighthouse behind you as the sky turns.

For wildlife, Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge, by the bridge, is free and open sunrise to sunset, with wading birds on the marsh. Dogs are not allowed there.

Low tide gives the widest beach and the best reflections, so check the tide chart before you go. For a look at the beach right now, see the Hilton Head webcams.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where are the best places to take pictures on Hilton Head Island?

The Harbour Town Lighthouse and yacht basin in Sea Pines, the ocean beaches at low tide (Coligny Beach Park and Folly Field are easy to reach), the salt marsh at Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge and the lake in the Sea Pines Forest Preserve.

Where can I see the sunset on Hilton Head?

Harbour Town and South Beach in Sea Pines face west over Calibogue Sound. A sunset cruise from Harbour Town is the easiest way to get the lighthouse and the sky in one picture.

Can I visit Harbour Town if I am not staying in Sea Pines?

Yes. Anyone can enter Sea Pines with a day gate pass, which covers the drive to Harbour Town, the lighthouse and South Beach.

What time of day is best for beach pictures?

The last hour before sunset, when the light is soft and the beach is quieter, or sunrise over the ocean. A low tide leaves a wide, firm stretch of sand that reflects the sky.

Can I hire a photographer for family pictures on the beach?

Yes. Local photographers book short family sessions on the beach, most often in the hour before sunset. See our Hilton Head photographers page for live availability.
