About Port Royal Beach, Hilton Head Plantation

Port Royal Plantation is Hilton Head’s only entirely residential oceanfront community — no hotels, no timeshares, and no short-term vacation rentals inside the gates. In exchange, it holds some of the widest and least crowded beachfront on the island: close to three miles of it, split between the open Atlantic and the calmer water of Port Royal Sound where the two meet. Nineteen separate beach walks lead residents and guests down from the community’s streets to the sand.

Built in 2020 and funded by the community itself, the Port Royal Beach House sits directly on the oceanfront — a screened porch and deck looking out over the water, next to an Olympic-size pool and a separate kiddie pool that stays open year-round. It’s a resident-and-guest gathering spot rather than anything bookable by outside visitors.

Getting to Port Royal Beach, Hilton Head Plantation

There’s no public parking lot or day-use pass at Port Royal Plantation’s gate — access is limited to residents, their guests, and people renting inside the community. The beach itself is public land under South Carolina law from the water to the high-water mark, same as everywhere on the island, but reaching it without going through the gate means arriving by boat.

Port Royal Plantation is better known island-wide for its golf than its beach — Barony and Robber’s Row, the two courses at Port Royal Golf & Racquet Club, both sell public tee times even though the beach and the rest of the community stay resident-and-guest-only.
