Hilton Head Island Traffic Cams

Nine live Beaufort County cameras on the drive onto Hilton Head, from the bridges to Sea Pines Circle. Each shows a new picture every 10 to 15 seconds.

Hilton Head Bridges Traffic Cam

Hwy 278 crosses the marsh on a run of bridges between Bluffton and the island, and it’s the only road on or off Hilton Head. The camera above sits on the bridges, so it’s the one to check before you set out. A line of brake lights here on a Saturday afternoon means the backup reaches into Bluffton.

Beaufort County Traffic Cameras on Hwy 278

These are in the order you pass them. Moss Creek Village is the last stretch in Bluffton before the bridges: if it’s backed up there, the crossing will be slow. On the island side, Windmill Harbour, Squire Pope Road and Gumtree Road are where the lights hold traffic, and at Spanish Wells Road the road splits for the south end.

Cross Island Parkway and Sea Pines Circle

Past Spanish Wells Road you pick a route. The Cross Island Parkway crosses Broad Creek to the south end in about five minutes, and it’s been free since the toll ended in 2021. William Hilton Parkway runs past Mathews Drive and most of the island’s shops, a slower 25 to 30 minutes. Both finish at Sea Pines Circle, the roundabout for Pope Avenue, Coligny and the Sea Pines gate.

Arriving on a Saturday

Most vacation rentals check out in the morning and check in around 4 p.m. on Saturday, so from late morning into the evening the bridges carry one crowd leaving and another arriving. In summer that’s the slowest drive of the week. Crossing before about 10 a.m. or after dinner is usually easier, and if your rental isn’t ready yet, lunch in Bluffton beats sitting in the line.

On weekdays the rush runs the other way: onto the island in the early morning and off it in the late afternoon, as people who work here come and go. Once you’re on the island, the Breeze trolley and golf carts skip the parking hunt at the beaches, and the parking guide covers the lots.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where can I see Hilton Head traffic cameras?

All nine Beaufort County cameras on the way onto the island are on this page, from Moss Creek Village in Bluffton and the bridges to Sea Pines Circle. The county runs them, and its own site, beaufortcountycams.com, carries the rest of the county’s cameras too.

Is there a camera on the Hilton Head bridge?

Yes. The county’s camera on Hwy 278 at the Hilton Head bridges is the first one on this page. The bridges are the only road on or off the island, so it shows the backup in both directions.

Are the traffic cameras live?

They are still pictures, not video. Each camera sends a new one every 10 to 15 seconds, and the page keeps fetching the latest while it’s open.

Is the Cross Island Parkway still a toll road?

No. The toll ended in July 2021, when the state paid off the parkway’s bonds, and the toll booths were taken out in 2022. The parkway is the fast way from the north end of the island to Sea Pines Circle.

When is traffic worst getting onto Hilton Head?

Saturday from late morning to evening in summer, when most rentals turn over, plus the weekday rush as people who work on the island come and go. Holiday weekends and big events such as the RBC Heritage golf tournament in April add more.
