Captains Quarters (the sign at the gate spells it Captain’s Quarters) is a gated condominium of 64 villas at 2 Shelter Cove Lane, at the western end of Shelter Cove Harbour & Marina on Hilton Head Island. It is two five-story buildings, Starboard and Port, set so that most balconies look out over Broad Creek, the salt marsh and the mouth of the harbour rather than over a parking lot.
It is one of the Shelter Cove rentals we cover, and the one to pick if you want the harbour close by but the evenings quiet: the restaurants and the boardwalk are a short walk east, far enough that the summer music does not carry.
The Villas
Most villas have one or two bedrooms. The one-bedrooms are compact flats; the two-bedrooms have two full baths. A handful of penthouses on the top two floors are two-level units with vaulted ceilings and more than one balcony. Owners have renovated many units, so finishes vary a good deal from one villa to the next.
Pool and Grounds
The pool, a kiddie pool and a hot tub sit on the water side, looking toward Broad Creek, with changing rooms and a shaded seating area beside them. There is a rack for kayaks and a covered, lit bike rack, which matters here: the bike paths run from the gate to the harbour, the Towne Centre and across the parkway.
Getting to the Beach
Shelter Cove is on the sound side of the island, so the ocean is across William Hilton Parkway in Palmetto Dunes. The Palmetto Dunes Buggy, the free seasonal shuttle that also serves Shelter Cove, runs guests across William Hilton Parkway to the Palmetto Dunes beach, golf and tennis. Owners here share the Palmetto Dunes amenities; if you are renting, ask whoever you book with how beach access and passes work for guests.
