The Hospital on Hilton Head Island

Novant Health Hilton Head Medical Center is the island’s only hospital and the only emergency room on Hilton Head. It opened in 1975 as Hilton Head Hospital and was later Hilton Head Regional Medical Center, which is still the name on many maps and old directions. Novant Health bought it from Tenet Healthcare, together with Coastal Carolina Medical Center in Hardeeville, in February 2024.

It sits on the north end, off William Hilton Parkway near Main Street, about 15 minutes from Shelter Cove and 25 to 30 minutes from Sea Pines in normal traffic. The emergency room is open 24 hours a day. The hospital is a Joint Commission Primary Stroke Center and has earned the American Heart Association’s Get With The Guidelines Stroke Gold Plus award, and Healthgrades has named its orthopedic surgery program among America’s 100 best.

Emergency Room or Urgent Care?

For chest pain, trouble breathing, signs of a stroke, a serious injury or anything after the clinics close, go to the ER or call 911. Hilton Head Island Fire Rescue answers 911 on the island and runs the ambulances; on the beach, give the dispatcher the number on the nearest beach marker post. For a sprain, a cut that needs stitches, an ear infection or a jellyfish sting during the day, an urgent care clinic is faster and costs far less.

Is Hilton Head Medical Center a Trauma Center?

No. It is not on South Carolina’s list of designated trauma centers at any level. The ER treats and stabilizes serious injuries, and patients who need a trauma center are usually moved to Memorial Health University Medical Center in Savannah, the region’s Level I trauma center, about 45 minutes away, often by helicopter.
