Charleston Harbor Tides: What to Expect

Charleston has two high tides and two low tides a day, a little over six hours apart. The water rises and falls about 5 feet between them on an average day, and close to 8 feet on the biggest tides of the year, which come around the new and full moon. The highest of them can push water into low-lying streets downtown near high tide, so check the city’s flood alerts before you park on a low street that day.

These times are for the harbor at the downtown waterfront. Tides at the beaches outside the harbor and up the Ashley and Cooper rivers run a little earlier or later, so treat the times here as a close guide there.
