The Sportsman at Melrose

The menu is pub food done with some care: burgers, wings, a Philly cheesesteak called The Melrose, meatball and turkey-bacon subs, a pizza sub, tacos, a Mexican hamburger wrapped in a tortilla with refried beans and green chili, and pizzas with your choice of toppings. Nothing is deep fried, because the kitchen air-fries, and there are gluten-free buns and a build-your-own veggie sandwich or wrap. The bar has beer, wine and cocktails, and there are smoothies and ice cream for the children.

Takeout is available with a 10% charge; there is no delivery. Karaoke is weekly and music bingo monthly, and the room is air-conditioned in summer, with the fire lit in winter.

Finding The Sportsman

The Sportsman is on Avenue of Oaks, on the way into Melrose. Despite the name, Melrose Landing, where the public ferry from Hilton Head docks, is on the other side of the island by Freeport Marina, so it is a golf cart ride from the boat; the Daufuskie Island ferry guide has the details. There is a small lot for golf carts, and cars and trucks park at the road. Dogs are welcome on the patio, which has water bowls; only service animals go inside. No reservation is needed, but call or text (470) 270-6986 as a heads-up for a party of more than 10.
