Bloody Point, Daufuskie Island, South Carolina

The wide, empty beach at Bloody Point on Daufuskie Island, with palmettos and pines behind the dunes

The southern tip of Daufuskie Island: a wide public beach, a gated community around a closed golf course, and the 1883 lighthouse with its winery.

Bloody Point Beach

Bloody Point Beach is the Atlantic beach at the south end of Daufuskie Island, and it is public. It is one of the two easy ways onto the island’s ocean shore, along with the public path off Cresting Wave Lane.

A loop that fits a day trip: the beach at Bloody Point, then the lighthouse and its winery on the way back up the island. Our things to do on Daufuskie Island page has the rest.

Bloody Point Golf and the Resort

Bloody Point was built in the 1980s as one of the island’s three planned communities, a gated neighborhood of homes and lots built around a golf course. Tom Weiskopf and Jay Morrish designed the course, which opened in 1991. It was renovated by Love Golf Design and reopened under a new owner in 2011, with cottages and a water taxi from Savannah, and it closed again in 2018.

No golf is played at Bloody Point now. The property owners’ association and Beaufort County Council backed rezoning the course land for open space, linear parks and trails, alongside an expanded inn, a village core and a beach club, so the course is not waiting to reopen. The one course you can play on the island is the private Haig Point; our Daufuskie Island golf page explains how visitors get a round.

Homes at Bloody Point still rent by the week and come up for sale. See Daufuskie Island rentals for a stay and Daufuskie Island real estate for homes and lots.

The Lighthouse and Silver Dew Winery

The Bloody Point Lighthouse is a white keeper’s house on Beach Road with a lamp in its dormer window, lit in 1883 to guide ships into the Savannah River. It is a museum now, and the Silver Dew Winery pours tastings in its old brick oil house. Hours change with the seasons, so call ahead; the lighthouse page has the number and its full story.

How Bloody Point, Daufuskie Island Got Its Name

The point takes its name from battles between the Yamasee and the Carolina settlers there in 1715, during the Yamasee War. In 1899, about 25,000 soldiers returning from the Spanish-American War were held in quarantine at Bloody Point for five days. The rest of the island’s past is on our Daufuskie Island history page.
