Almost every bed on Hilton Head Island sits inside one of a handful of large planned communities, so the first decision is usually which part of the island you want to wake up in — and only then whether you want a rental home, a resort, or a hotel.
Rental home, resort, or hotel
Vacation rental homes and villas are the island’s dominant form of lodging, and for a family or a group they are usually the better value: full kitchens, laundry, and far more space per dollar than a hotel room. Most are handled by professional management companies; some are rented directly by their owners.
Resorts trade that space for service and amenities — pools, on-site dining, golf and tennis access, and children’s programming. Hotels are the simplest option for a short stay, a shoulder-season trip, or a visit built around one thing, and they cluster near Coligny and along the island’s main corridor.
If you are staying in a rental home but still want resort amenities, day passes are worth looking into — several properties sell pool and facility access to non-guests.
Choosing a community
Sea Pines is the island’s southern tip and its best-known community, with Harbour Town, its marina and lighthouse, extensive trails, and its own beach clubs. Palmetto Dunes and Shipyard sit mid-island with direct beach access and their own golf and racquet facilities. Hilton Head Plantation covers much of the island’s quieter north end.
Outside the gates, the Coligny and Shelter Cove areas put you within walking distance of shops, restaurants, and nightlife, which matters more than beach proximity for some visitors. Our neighborhood and area guides go through these one by one.
Practical notes
Rental weeks on the island still run largely Saturday-to-Saturday in peak summer, and the best-located homes book months out. Shoulder seasons — April through May, and September into October — tend to be the sweet spot on both price and weather.
Many rentals sit inside gated communities that charge for vehicle passes and limit beach parking, so confirm what your booking includes before you arrive.
