When to visit
Summer is peak season — warmest water, longest days, highest prices, and the busiest beaches. Spring and early fall are the island’s best-kept trade-off: comfortable temperatures, thinner crowds, and rates well below July. Winter is quiet and mild by East Coast standards, though some seasonal businesses reduce hours.
Two things worth putting on the calendar before you book: the island’s PGA Tour week in April, which fills lodging island-wide, and Atlantic hurricane season, which runs through the late summer and fall and is the main reason to read a cancellation policy closely.
Getting here and getting around
Hilton Head Island Airport handles regional service directly on the island; Savannah/Hilton Head International, about an hour away, carries more routes and is the more common arrival point for longer trips.
Once you are here, the island’s paved multi-use path network is genuinely useful rather than decorative — a great many visitors rent bikes for the week and drive very little. Taxis, shuttles, and rideshare all operate on the island, and bike rental companies will usually deliver to your rental.
