Emory Campbell & Tom Barnwell, Jr. | Bridges Between Generations
February 17 @ 5:00 pm - 6:30 pm

Emory Campbell is a legendary Gullah community leader, born and raised on Hilton Head Island, who has devoted his life to preservation, cultural connection, and bridging Gullah communities with the wider world. He helped lead the historic “Gullah Homecoming” to Sierra Leone, hosted heads-of-state, and has been honored for decades for his work safeguarding traditions and place.
Tom Barnwell (a descendant from Hilton Head’s Gullah community) is connected to the earliest narratives of Mitchelville; his family lineage speaks to the generational continuity of land, memory, and craft.
Together, they will weave generational stories — from post-Civil War reconstruction to the present day — illustrating how memory, land, language, and leadership persist in Gullah life. This is a night bound to feel like sitting around a hearth, hearing truths and dreams from those who carry the Gullah legacy in their voices.
